Behind the Terror

Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger designed the Alien along with its horrific environment. The costume consisted of 15 separate pieces over a full-body black suit. It cost $250,000 to make. Giger constructed it out of polyester, rubber, animal meat, oysters, and real bones. Ron Cobb had a different idea of what the Alien looked like, but after Ridley Scott received a copy of Giger's book, Necronomicon, he realized only Giger's dark images could bring the terrifying species to life.

Both Giger and Scott agreed at no time should the creature be fully revealed, and that it shouldn't just be a guy in a rubber suit, but due to budget constraints, they didn't have a choice. 6'10" Bolaji Badejo was cast as the Alien. Giger designed the suit around the actor's tall slender frame while Carl Rambaldi built the head of the Alien. Scott edited the film so the Alien is shown only for brief moments. It's never fully revealed. Through their efforts, they managed to create the most frightening creature in Hollywood history.
