Deleted Scenes

Ridley Scott cut 11 minutes out of Alien to maintain the pace and not reveal too much of the ghastly creature. To hear him talk about these decisions, download the audio file available here. In 2003, the extraordinary filmmaker came out with a Director's Cut of Alien, reincorporating a lot of excised material back into the movie while also fixing up the sound and making some other tweaks. Most of the other unused scenes in this subsection are available as extras on the Alien Quadrilogy, the Alien: Collector's Edition Laserdisc, and the Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition DVD. This list is in chronological order.
File 01: The Nostromo's Tow

The exterior of the Nostromo's tow is slowly revealed. As far as I know, this scene isn't in the Director's Cut. It's only available as an extra on the Alien: Collector's Edition Laserdisc and possibly the Quadrilogy.

File 02: Rise and Shine

After being awakened from hypersleep, Kane wanders out to the kitchen of the ship to get some coffee. "Rise and shine, Lambert," he says. "What time is it?" she replies. Kane answers, "What do you care?"

File 03: The Derelict Transmission

Dallas, Ripley, Kane, Ash, and Lambert are all gathered on the bridge of the Nostromo. "Can we all hear that Lambert?" Dallas asks. Lambert turns on the distress call. When it concludes, Kane says, "Good god." "It doesn't sound like any radio signal I've heard," Ripley adds. "Maybe it's a voice," Lambert suggests. Dallas tells her to home in on it. She tells them details about the planet. The scene ends with Ash saying, "We can walk on it." The film's producers hired Ben Burtt, winner of an Academy Award for his sound effects on Star Wars, to create the transmission.

File 04: Rock Formation

While they're outside looking for the source of the S.O.S., Dallas, Kane, and Lambert stop to take a short break under a rock formation. As the three leave, a strange shape reveals itself. Over fifteen feet tall and fossilized into the other side of the rock, nobody notices it except Ash. This scene was in the script, but it doesn't appear to have been filmed. I've only found a few photos of it from the Topps trading card set.

File 05: Alien Pyramid

Inside the Derelict, the Nostromo's search party originally finds a triangle that the Space Jockey has carved into its dashboard, apparently as its last act. After the planet's endless dust storm settles, the crew sees a huge pyramid on the horizon. They scale it, find an opening on top, and a volunteer lowers himself down inside. He finds a giant chamber, resembling a tomb or a place of worship. There are several weird statues and some sort of hieroglyphics, which represent the Alien's reproductive cycles. The crew member stumbles upon the Alien spores, becoming host to one.

This summary was taken from The Book of Alien which goes on to quote Ridley Scott, "The pyramid and the derelict-two different elements-were still the subject of a seesaw debate when I came on the project. I would love to have shot it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would have been wonderful in a three-hour version. What finally cracked it was the budget. We just had to get rid of it. And you know, sometimes financial practicalities force you to do a certain amount of editorial work, and I'm glad we simplified it."

The above image is a piece of concept art done by Chris Foss. More can be seen in the Behind the Terror subsection.

File 06: Kane's Gun

Kane pulls out one of the weapons you see hanging from their compression suits. He looks around with it. Then lowers it to examine the egg more closely. This would've been the only time you see this gun in anybody's hands. Pictures of this scene and the one below come from footage in a special making-of documentary about the first film. It was only available as a bonus disc with the Alien Legacy box set, and you had to mail in a coupon to get it. The Alien Quadrilogy also has these clips as extras.

File 07: Bringing Kane Inside

Ash helps Dallas carry Kane into the Nostromo. Lambert follows them inside. They set Kane down outside the inner hatch. Dallas shuts the airlock.

File 08: Confrontation

After Kane is brought back onboard the Nostromo, the crew watches Ash and Dallas inspect him. In the corridor outside the Medlab, Ripley climbs down a ladder, and Lambert goes berserk on her for not letting them back in. Parker and Brett pull the two women apart. Dallas chimes in, "Ripley, when I give an order, I expect to be obeyed." Ripley retorts, "Even if it's against the law?" "You're goddamn right." Ripley then gets Lambert to tell them what happened. She says Kane went below and found some egg things. This scene explains how in the sequel Ripley knew that Kane saw thousands of Eggs, because she had to learn that from somebody.

File 09: Kane's Condition

After the Facehugger's blood eats through a few floors, Lambert appears behind Ash in the Medlab asking if any acid got on him. "No," he replies. Lambert says they need to find a way to get it off him. Ash responds, "Yes, well, I don't think we ought to try that again. It didn't work out too well last time." He then states he needs to get some intravenous feeding going. He asks Lambert if she's alright. "Yes," she answers. Ash puts Kane into the Autodoc. The rest of the crew arrives and asks Ash if he's going to be okay. Ripley sees an X-Ray of Kane's chest. "What is that dark stain on Kane's lung?" "I don't know Ripley. Whatever it is, it's blocking the scanner," replies Ash. Dallas tells everyone to go back to work.

File 10: Repair Progress

Parker and Brett continue to work on the repairs. Brett thinks he got it. Parker replies, "I'm sorry, my friend, you don't have anything." Brett was sure that was it. "Well, it's not man, try the next one. What engineering school did you go to?" Ripley then radios down to them. "What's happening down there?" Parker makes a joke to Brett. "A lot of real hard work. Hard work, Ripley." Ripley says she can hear it. Parker thinks she ought to try it sometime. Ripley responds that she has the toughest job on the ship; listening to them. Parker asks, "Why don't you get off my back?" "I'll get off your back as soon as 12 Module is fixed." Parker calls her a bitch.

File 11: Planning the Search

After Kane's death, the crew regroups around the dinner table to discuss what to do next. Brett asks Ash how to do deal with it since he's studied it. Ash responds, "I don't know Brett." Dallas suggests they capture it and eject it from the ship. "How are we going to do that?" Ash asks. "Flush it out," answers Dallas. "That'll take forever," Ripley replies. "You have an alternative?" questions Dallas. Ash warns that their oxygen supplies are based on them spending a limited amount of time out of hypersleep. The crew tells him they aren't going back into hypersleep with that thing running around. Parker thinks they need to find a way to kill it. Lambert tells him, "We can't kill it, its body acid will burn straight through the hull." Parker suggests putting on pressure suits and blowing the air out of the ship. Lambert says sarcastically, "That's a terrific idea." Parker asks whose idea it was to let that thing onboard. Everyone starts shouting. Ash breaks it up, saying, "Just a minute. Now, I really do hate to point this out, but it might be better off without oxygen. It has lived that way long enough." Ripley brings up the problem of finding it. They're blind on B and C decks. Lambert adds, "And what do we do when we find it?" "We trap it somehow," answers Dallas. Brett recommends they use a strong net and a cattle-prod. Lambert questions, "Why do we listen to this idiot?" Brett asks if anybody has a better idea. "How long it would take?" Dallas wonders. Parker and Brett decide about 20 min to an hour. They leave. Dallas says, "More like 2 to 3 with them." "Great," Ash replies.

File 12: Sex in the Narcissus

Ripley visits Dallas in the Narcissus. She tells him she needs some relief. Dallas says, "We're the new pioneers, Ripley. We even get to have our own special disease." They continue to talk some more before having sex. This was all the script had, but according to The Book of Alien, they were supposed to have been interrupted by Kane's corpse floating by, and this scene was supposed to be in an observatory bubble. None of this was filmed. The above image is a storyboard done by Ridley Scott. One problem with this scene is Kane's corpse is shot out away from the Nostromo.

File 13: Brett's Extended Death Scene

The Alien grabs Brett's head. He yells for Parker. Blood starts to pour out of him as the Alien crushes his skull. The Alien lifts him up into the landing gear as Ripley and Parker rush in. Parker stands where Brett was and looks up. Blood drips down on his shirt. Brett's cattle-prod falls to his feet. This would've explained how Parker describes the Alien as huge and that it took Brett up into the vents. The problem is his shirt isn't bloody in the next scene.

File 14: Ripley Reassures Lambert

After Dallas disappears and Ripley decides to blow up the ship, she tries to reassure Lambert. "I think it's only way," Ripley tells her. "I'm sorry, you know, it just seems like you're asking us to kill each other one by one," answers Lambert. "I promise you. If it doesn't look like it's going to work, I'll get us out of here." Ripley tells Lambert to hang in there, asking, "Have you ever slept with Ash?" Lambert replies, "No, I never got the idea he was particularly interested. Why?" Ripley ignores the question, telling her to figure out where they are now and to plot their course.

File 15: Airlock Sequence

Parker sees the Alien near the main airlock. He talks to Lambert and Ripley through the ship's comm channels. Parker instructs them to slowly open the door in front of the creature. The Alien is lured inside by a flashing green light. Ripley and Lambert wait to seal the airlock until Parker gives the command. Just as he tells them to do it, an alarm is triggered. The Alien rushes out. An appendage gets caught in the closing door. Acidic blood spills on the corridor. Ripley runs to join Parker. They both fall unconscious to the floor because of a hull breach from the creature's blood. Lambert and Ash come to their rescue. Ripley vocalizes her suspicions about Ash, accusing him of setting off the alarm. Only the part on the Nostromo's bridge was filmed. None of the sequence near the airlock was shot.

File 16: Ash's Blister
Originally, Ripley couldn't communicate with Mother so easily. She had to find a key card to go inside the special computer room. Suspicious of Ash, Ripley searches his blister (where you see Ash watching Dallas, Lambert, and Kane as they head toward the Derelict). After she finds the access card, she hears something hitting the blister's window. When she looks up, she sees Kane's bloated face against the plexiglass. Ripley rushes out with the key card. This scene was in the script, but it wasn't filmed.

File 17: Buildup to the Attack

The scene where Lambert and Parker are killed used to be a lot longer. It showed the Alien sitting on the far side of the room away from Lambert. The coolant bottles roll up next to the creature. When Lambert spots it, the Alien unrolls its tail and walks over to her in a crab-like style. Then it slowly stands up, revealing its full body.

File 18: Cocoon Scene

After Ripley finds the remains of Parker and Lambert, she makes another discovery. Near the Nostromo's landing gear, she sees a cocooned Dallas and Brett. They're mutating into Eggs. She tries to think of a way to help Dallas, but there's nothing she can do. He tells her to kill him. She won't. He keeps begging her, barely able to speak. Finally, Ripley burns the whole place with her Flamethrower.
