The Nostromo, a commercial towing vessel on its way to earth, picks up a distress signal originating from a nearby planet. Mother, the ship's computer, automatically wakes up its sleeping crew. Following company orders to investigate, the spacecraft sets down on LV-426, but during the landing, the ship is damaged. A three-person team ventures out to find the signal's acoustical beacon while Parker and Brett work on repairs. Outside, Dallas, Kane, and Lambert discover a mysterious derelict ship on the misty horizon.

On the Nostromo, Ripley realizes the distress signal is actually a warning, but Ash, the Science Officer, convinces her not to go after the rescue team. The Derelict looks empty except for the remnants of the Space Jockey, the ship's pilot, and a massive chamber full of Eggs. While exploring this colossal section, Kane gets attacked by a Facehugger, a frightening creature that attaches itself to his head. Lambert and Dallas return to the ship, dragging Kane back with them.

Once she sees the strange organism on Kane's face, Ripley refuses to let them inside. "If we break quarantine, we could all die." Ash opens the door. Repairs are completed, and the ship lifts off.

The Facehugger falls off Kane and dies. He seems fine. The crew decides to have one last meal before going into hypersleep again. While they're eating, a Chestburster explodes out of Kane and scurries off, hiding and growing in the darkness of the huge vessel. Kane's lifeless body is shot out into space. Rigging up a motion tracker and a cattle prod, the crew decides to search for the Alien.

While looking for it, Brett accidently lets the ship's cat escape. He tries to find it again, but the now adult-sized creature kills him. Dallas leads a new plan to flush the Alien into an airlock and blow it out of the ship. He panics and goes the wrong way straight into the monster. Only his flamethrower is left behind.

Ripley tries to ask Mother how they can destroy the Alien. She learns the company wants the Alien, and they're willing to sacrifice the crew to get it. Ash starts acting weird. He tries to kill Ripley by suffocating her. Parker saves her, and they find out Ash is an android sent by the company.

After burning his body, the remaining crew members decide to set the Nostromo to self-destruct and evacuate in its escape shuttle, the Narcissus. While trying to get coolant for the trip home, Parker and Lambert are slaughtered by the Alien, leaving Ripley as the last person alive. She gets onboard the Narcissus and launches away as the Nostromo explodes in an incredible blinding blast.

As she gets ready for hypersleep, Ripley stumbles upon the Alien. It was hiding on the shuttle. She puts on a compression suit and opens the vessel's airlock. The Alien gets forced into the open, and Ripley shoots it out into space, but it stays attached to the ship. Ripley incinerates it in the shuttle's thrusters. Ripley and the cat are the only survivors.
