Theatrical Release


Alien was released stateside on May 25th, 1979. Domestically, it grossed $78.9 million while racking up another $24 million in foreign markets. With a budget of a mere $11 million, it has earned over $102 million worldwide. The film's premiere was held at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood where a mock-up of the Egg chamber, the Mother set, and a 3/4 replica of the Space Jockey were displayed. The exhibit was later tragically vandalized and destroyed. The film's widest release was on June 22nd, 1979, when it played in 635 theaters with an opening weekend of $5.3 million. In 2003, the Director's Cut came to theaters, making around $2 million for its entire run. What was supposed to be a wide release was cut down to a very limited one.
