After MTV News crowned her the most badass movie heroine ever, Sigourney Weaver told MTV, "You know, Fox was going to do another one. They had it written. Joss Whedon wrote it. It took place on earth, which, I have to say, just really didn’t interest me. And I just felt that every time we went out there, we needed to have a really original piece. I was all for going back to the original planet; I thought that would be interesting," she explained. "But I was alone in that; we couldn’t really agree on what would be interesting. Once they were committed to 'Alien vs. Predator'..." she trailed off. "If you don't respect the creature - I haven’t seen them - but it just becomes too hum-drum." "Even in twenty years, if someone came to me and said, 'This is the story, and it’s a really interesting story using that world' [I'd do it]. I think it's an amazing saga," the 59-year-old actress reasoned. "I don't sit around thinking, 'Oh I want to do another Alien,' but it does feel slightly unfinished to me. But that has a lot to do with Fox, so it wouldn't surprise me if another generation at Fox, looking at what they have, would [make it work]. There have been lots of 'Alien' impersonators, but there is something about [that first] one," she said of Ripley’s original film, as well as the franchise it spawned. "I just don't feel that it's quite finished."
Sigourney Weaver spoke with OK Magazine about resurrecting her famous character. "I would definitely do another if I had a director like Ridley Scott and we had a good idea," she says of the classic sci-fi movie franchise. "Ridley is enthusiastic about it."
In a recent interview with MTV, Sigourney Weaver said, "The last time [Ridley and I] saw each other we talked about it. The character is still interesting. I'd love to work with Ridley again. But Fox has effectively killed it because of 'Alien vs. Predator.' What else can you do with the creature? You can take the situation, you can go back to where they came from." Then she added, "To play someone who ages a couple hundred years was fascinating [but] let [Ripley] rest." Honestly, they should just ignore AvP and its craptacular sequel and actually make a good Aliens film again. Scott had an amazing idea, and it'll be one of the worst could-have-beens in history if they never do it. As much as I hate AvP, using it as a reason not to make the film that fans really want is inexcusable.
Ain't It Cool News interviewed James Cameron today and confirmed that he was working on writing a fifth Alien film when Fox chose AvP instead. Unbelievable. According to Cameron, Fox thought they had a "great" script too. Ridley Scott was also going to be involved, potentially directing.
Sci-Fi Wire recently asked Ridley Scott if he was still interested in directing Alien 5. He responded very bluntly, "No. I think they've wrung it dry." I imagine that attitude is due to the atrocity that is AvP. I seriously doubt Cameron still wants to write Alien 5 either. Thanks a lot Paul Anderson.
When asked about Alien 5 at a press conference in Sydney, Ridley Scott said, "You know I thought it'd be nice. I'd do it. It really is entirely dependent on the take on the material. It's all about material. I've been asked about Alien 5, and I said of course. We've started a script meeting. I mean, I've started it off so I may as well close the door - if in fact this is meant to be the last one." In late January, he stated, "I'm seriously mulling it over. I think it would be a lot of fun, but the most important thing is to get the story right. Would Sigourney Weaver and her aliens infest Earth this time? Earth would be interesting, and there is talk about it. I say we should go back to where the alien creatures were first found and explain how they were created. No one has ever explained why. I always figured that a battleship carrying bio-mechanical organisms that could be weapons was sent into space with some space jockey who didn't last long." Judging from his intentions and past experience, I think Ridley Scott would be perfect for the job. I wish him luck in cleaning up the mess that Resurrection left.
Sigourney Weaver spoke with London's Sunday Times about the possibility of her involvement in a fifth Alien film and her future film career. It seems that she is very eager to do more filmwork. She said, "If they want to write a good script for another Alien film and give me $20 million, then fine. If it's more sex they want, great. Another brilliant drama? Yes, please. Even if I got pregnant again at this age, I'd want the baby. I'm up for anything."
There was an article about Weaver in the Calgary Herald, a Canadian newspaper. The text from it is below.
Another article about Weaver appeared in the Sun Sentinel, a Florida newspaper. It can be seen below. ![]()
Sigourney Weaver took part in a Yahoo! Chat in which she was asked about Alien 5. She responded that she was under the impression there wasn't much interest in a fifth film. She added if people want to see one, they should email Fox online. You can do so at foxmovies@fox.com.
Cindy Perlman talked with Weaver about a 5th Alien film. Below is the text of the article.
Sigourney Weaver and Joss Whedon both spoke with TV Guide Online about the Alien 5 rumors. The text from the article is below.
Most news sites have managed to leave out a part of Weaver's latest quote on Alien 5 so here it is. While speaking with Syndicated columnist Liz Smith, Weaver said, "People come up to me on the street saying 'Hey, Alien 5! Great, when's it gonna happen?' And I go, 'Wait, wait, wait a minute!'"
Weaver told Access Hollywood, "I was interested to read that I was doing [a 5th film] for a phenomenal amount of money. Unfortunately, it wasn't true. At least the sum. And I haven't really talked to Fox about making another." She said that she believes that undoubtedly there is a screenplay for Alien 5 "laying around" somewhere at Fox, but that all systems, at this point, are no go.
The staff of Coming Soon!, a movie news site, went straight to 20th Century Fox about the Reuters rumors, and they were told that there is no truth to any of it whatsoever. Alien 5 isn't being made yet, and Weaver has other plans besides reprising Ripley.
Reuters and Yahoo!, two major news services, have both published rumors about Alien 5 that originally ran in the Sunday Express, a British tabloid. They state that Sigourney Weaver has agreed to reprise Ripley for 15 million pounds ($22 million U.S.), the film will take place on Earth and be released in 2004, and Joss Whedon will write the script. They also include the following quote from Weaver: "I've always wanted to do one where we go back to the planet from where the Alien originally came or even get to Earth." This is very similar to what Weaver said to Sci-Fi Wire when she was interviewed back in December 1999 except she never said anything about Earth so that part must be fake. Besides, Weaver has said before that if Alien 5 takes place on Earth, it will cheapen the series.
Several actors from Alien Resurrection have been asked to resurrect their roles in a 5th film according to Science Fiction World, a UK magazine. Obviously, this isn't true. It's just wishful thinking. The Hollywood trades would've ran this first.
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the makers of Independence Day and Godzilla (one of the worst movies of all time), have been hired to write and direct Alien 5. I'm sure this ridiculous rumor is false, and I couldn't be happier. They should never be allowed near this franchise.
Two domain names that appear to be for a 5th Alien film have been registered, and both forward to 20th Century Fox's official website. They are alienv.com and alien5movie.com. There is also alien5.com, but it's apparently just an ad for Yahoo! Domains.
Sigourney Weaver was on the BBC TV show Film 2000 promoting Galaxy Quest when she was asked about the potential of reprising Ripley. Whereas she has seemed positive and eager in the past, today it seemed she apparently replied with a quick apology saying that she didn't know and indicated to the interviewer to quickly move on.
The latest issue of Cinescape Presents contains teaser information for Alien 5, which says Ripley's clone will travel to the Alien's homeworld for a final showdown, and it lists the film's release in 2004, the 25th anniversary of Alien.
Alien 5 will supposedly feature more variations to the Aliens themselves. On January 21, 2000, the same person who started this rumor added that there will also be a Predator encounter in the film.
Sigourney Weaver told Sci-Fi Wire: "I've always wanted to do one where we go back to the planet from which the Alien originally came. I don't know if there are any plans to do another one. It wouldn't surprise me if some time in the next 20 years or so, you see a white-haired Ripley hobbling around out there. But I haven't heard of anything." Weaver also said that a 5th film has "never been a serious discussion."
The filming of Alien 5 will begin in 2001, and the film will come out by 2003. All the actors whose characters survived in Alien Resurrection will reprise their roles. This information was taken from interviews conducted and broadcasted on the Movie Network in Canada. This rumor floated around again on May 31, 2000, but one Alien fan reported that he lived in Canada and wasn't aware of the Movie Network. To end this confusion, a man who has been living in Canada for 31 years recently stepped forward and confirmed the Movie Network's existance. Too bad that doesn't validate these rumors. No deals have been made for Alien 5.
Sigourney Weaver was interviewed by the Toronto Star while she was attending the huge Toronto International Film Festival in Ontario, Canada. She stated that she didn't want Alien 5 to take place on Earth but on the Alien's homeworld since she thought that an Alien film on Earth would degrade the series.
The latest issue of Total Film magazine states that there is a script for Alien 5, Sigourney Weaver is onboard reprising her role as Ripley 8 and also acting under the status of Executive Producer, and the team is looking for a suitable director. The film is rumored to be released in March 2000.
Joss Whedon has stated he was offered to write Alien 5 but turned it down due to how poorly the last film, Alien Resurrection, turned out. At the San Diego Comicon, Whedon was asked if he or anyone else was working on a script for Alien 5, and he responded, "That's a big no. Did you see Alien 4?"
Sigourney Weaver has signed on to star in Alien 5 for $18 million. The amount she was originally rumored to have received was $20 million. She will help write the script and/or direct. This is definitely false despite how the press is claiming otherwise.
Whedon allegedly finished his script and submitted it to Fox who rejected it because of a drastic change in Ripley's character. The screenplay was titled, "Alien Revelation." Resurrection changed Ripley quite a bit, and Fox didn't reject that.
Bishop will return as the leader of the 2nd generation androids and wish to sterilize Earth, using nukes after Aliens have infested it. Below is an alleged excerpt from Alien 5's script, which floated around with this rumor.
An interview supposedly took place in which an unidentified person at Fox reported that Wren put Alien Eggs on the Betty and Aliens will wreak havoc in New York. I think it's safe to say that this is false.
Jeunet was asked to direct, but he turned it down since he felt a new director should be used every time. Other possible directors include Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner), Luc Besson (5th Element), and Vincenzo Natali (Cube).
Marines will return to the devastated LV-426 and find the Derelict Ship, but once more something goes wrong when a Dropship returns to an orbiting mothership with an Alien onboard. The mothership blows up, sending the Dropship back to the planet where it crashes. A few marines survive, and the story continues from there. This was said to be false on January 19, 1998, because LV-426 is not the Alien's homeworld, and Alien 5 will only be covering new ground.
Entertainment Weekly supposedly got Fox Chairman Tom Rothman to confirm that Alien 5 is a definite reality, and Joss Whedon will have the first chance to write the script. The project is tentatively titled, "Alien Revelation," and it may be released by Christmas 1999. Earth is rumored to be in plot of the next film, but not in the way fans think, and Whedon has hinted that a big story has yet to be told with interesting things taking place on Earth.
Weaver confirmed that there will definitely be a 5th film, and she gave Fox hints that she is ready to negotiate. Another rumor states that both Weaver and Ryder have signed on to do two new Alien movies. This is obviously just wishful thinking since Fox wants to see how well Alien Resurrection will be received.
Joss Whedon, writer of Alien Resurrection, has made an exclusive $20 million dollar deal with 20th Century Fox under which his production company, Mutant Enemy, Inc., will make films for the studio. Could one of these movies be Alien 5? It's possible but not likely at this point. |
