Behind the Terror

James Cameron is largely responsible for the success of Aliens. He wrote the script, introducing the Queen, which he designed, and the Colonial Marines. He also directed the picture, perfectly capturing the film's story while getting incredible performances from his cast. When it came to the Alien's look, he decided to remove the translucent cowl from its head (supposedly to show a new evolutionary development in the species), and he requested the Chestburster have two arms like the original one was supposed to have until Ridley Scott had them removed. The Aliens' nest was built at the closed Acton Power Station in London. Based on sketches by Ron Cobb and Cameron, Hadley's Hope consisted of three areas: a main complex, a "frontier town," and an atmosphere processing station, all of which was borded by a storm wall. Stan Winston helped construct the various forms of the Alien including the Queen. The sequel proved to be an instant classic thanks to these men.
